We have the best French onion chip dip home in Western New York! I have never found chip dip that would compare in taste.
That put me on the journey of making my chip dips.
Making homemade dips, sauces, and condiments is so easy and fun!
I love to experiment and see what I can come up with.
This dip can be made with either green or sweet onions cut into small pieces.
The green onion adds the perfect amount of onion flavor, while the sweet onion does a decent job.
I like the little square-shaped pieces you get by cutting up the large, sweet onion. The feel of them in the dip is perfect, but the green onion has a distinctly different taste. Please make it both ways to see which you like best.

Simple Ingredients
1- 12 oz. Sour Cream
4 Tablespoons Real Butter ( Purchase a quality butter with great flavor.)
1 Teaspoon Poultry Seasoning
1/4 Teaspoon Salt
2 Bunches of Green Onions OR 1 cup chopped sweet onion -Cut the white parts of the green onions into small pieces OR cut the sweet onion into small pieces. Remember to use some of the green from the green onions. I’ve learned that is where all the flavor is, and it makes a huge difference in recipes.
Simple Instructions
On low heat, cook the butter and the onions in a pan on the stovetop.
Continuously stir.
It is acceptable for the butter to boil gently. This will make the onions nice and tender.
Add the poultry seasoning and salt.
Cook until onions are tender and brownish.
When the onions are tender and brownish, cool the pan off the eye.
Add the sour cream into the pan once the butter and onions are excellent. I like adding it to the pan to ensure I get all the seasoning, butter, and onions mixed into the sour cream. If you pour the butter mixture into the sour cream, you will leave a lot of good flavor behind, so mix it in the pan.
After mixing all the ingredients, transfer the dip to a small serving bowl.
I am a Tortilla chip fan, but pick your favorite chips and enjoy.
Crackers, like Wheat Thins, are delicious with this dip, too!
